'Blues Matters' reviews Kevin Brown's Mojavé Dust.
This is Kevin Browns 5th album to date and is a solo acoustic blues album with 11 self-penned numbers and a cover of the Robert Johnson classic 'Travelling Riverside Blues'. On Mojave Dust, Kevin has taken the blues, pulled it apart and reassembled it into an original imaginative form with subtleties and inventions to form what is a classic modern blues album.....writes Paul Bufton.
Kevin Brown is not the type of musician to let the grass grow under his feet and his organic delivery of Mojave Dust has certainly not let the musical dust settle either. His skilful delivery of bottle neck slide playing is quite simply 'brilliantly awesome.' For the uninitiated, Kevin Brown's original and distinctive delivery of the blues is of the same quality as some of his contemporaries in his field viz. Kelly Joe Phelps, Rainer Ptacek, Ry Cooder.................. he is that good !
The title track 'Mojave Dust' musically illustrates the technical intricacies of Kevin's bottle neck wizardry and sets the standard and tone for the remainder of the album. Kevin's lyrical delivery throughout is melodic and soulful and complements his guitar playing to give it an air of completeness. Put this together with Kevin's compositions and you have the musical package known as 'Kevin Brown'. Mojave Dust illustrates Kevin Brown's song writing skills superbly; which not only embraces the standard 12 bar blues but goes beyond that to give the listener an emotional journey into the blues with a season ticket for life for the repeat journey. What an album!
